Road Trip Home: Day 1

The bus and Subaru made it to Montana in one piece! This was our campsite at the East Fork Dam near Lewistown, MT.
We departed Aberdeen, SD at 9am. Today is scheduled to be our longest drive to Lewiston, MT, about 600 miles. Quick pit stop at Mina, SD to check and secure loads. Stopped in Mobridge, SD for lunch, gas and hardware store.
Stopped again in Miles City, MT for gas, dinner and fed the dogs. Made sandwiches on the bus for dinner. Three more hours of scheduled driving to get to our marked campsite just outside of Lewistown, MT at East Fork Dam. We took one wrong turn which caused us not to arrive until after dark. We were exhausted from the long day, and were frustrated from not finding the campsite right away. This campsite was somewhat off the beaten path so we had carefully written down directions. Unfortunately, the directions didn't help much on the winding dirt roads and both our cell phones and GPS lost signal from . It was slow going navigating the narrow remote ranch roads, but we finally realized where we went wrong and backtracked to correct the course. Deer and one snake spotted at dusk. We were relieved when we pulled in. You could hear cattle mooing quietly in the distance as the steep hills grew to almost pitch black around us.

The next morning we woke up reflecting on a good nights rest. We took our time feeding the dogs, eating breakfast, and reviewing the day's route. Did some exploring of the dam and hillside while the dogs burned around chasing each other for about an hour. They even took a dip in the chilly lake. Pete and I always enjoy these remote campsites which are most often free of charge and other visitors. They always come with a view too!

All smiles before takeoff in Aberdeen, SD.

Bear loved following his nose--even right into the water despite the cool temps.

Rez barely sat down before taking off again after his morning swim.
