Road Trip Home: Day 8

We made it back into Alaska! Home stretch!
Strawberry pancakes for breakfast. Drove through Kluane National Park in the morning. Saw two year-old grizzly bears next to the road. Bear and moose scat very frequently in the road.
This day brought LOTS of frost heaves, but we still agreed that the roads in Alberta by the border were just as bad, if not worse. Maybe we were just prepared for these heaves and giant potholes? Maybe it was better communication on the radios? Far less traffic so we went at a much slower pace? Either way, it took my full attention because I didn't want to encounter any vehicle emergenices in the Yukon. Keeping Pete informed via radio worked well. It gave him plenty of time to brake or steer into the oncoming lane to smoothly avoid the obstacles.
Mid afternoon we crossed the border into Alaska! The border agents only confiscated one unlabeled bell pepper. Reason being is that Canada imports some peppers from countries that the U.S. does not allow. Or you can make your own assumptions like Pete ;)

We stayed at another fun campground south of Tok, AK. We went back to town to get provisions and ate some Thai from a food stand. We love Alaskan Thai food so it was a nice treat! Pete had a tall beer while I had a Thai tea. After dinner we went back to the campground and participated in their nightly sourdough pancake toss. Pete earned himself a free breakfast at their cafe! The cafe cook was the owner of the campground. We looked forward to showers the next morning, a hot breakfast at the cafe and landing at HOME the next day.

Happy faces at the Sourdough Campground in Tok, AK. It felt so good to be back in America, though Canada was a fun place to explore.

This is the maintained US & Canadian border. You can see all the trees that were removed far off into the distance.

Hello, I am Melissa, owner of Wild North Design. Recently, my husband and I decided to pick up and move to Alaska. This dream has been a couple years in the making and we are enjoying the journey so far. We love to learn and make all kinds of things. From wood craft, to painting, to vehicles, landscaping, building, exploring...we love it all! We are finding out that Alaska is a great fit for our restless minds and bodies! Excited for what the future holds for our expanding family!
